In the "Titanic Culture" I described earlier (see first comment), success increasingly depends on mythic personal narratives rather than institutional competence. This shift is nowhere more visible than in how we define expertise itself.
Gone are the days when experts rose through quiet mastery. Today's professional landscape rewards visibility over depth, influence over insight.
Everyone is now a "thought leader," micro-hero, or influencer. Platforms like LinkedIn and X have become the arenas where this symbolic leadership is enacted. Like and share this post if you agree :)
The visibility-first economy rewards: ✨ Simplifying complex ideas into digestible - often wrong content ✨ Taking strong positions on trending topics ✨ Building parasocial relationships with audiences ✨ Creating memorable personal narratives
But it often penalizes: 🚩 Nuanced thinking that doesn't fit in a post 🚩 Admitting uncertainty or complexity 🚩 Slow, methodical approaches to problems 🚩 Collaborative achievements that can't be attributed to one person
