🚢 "Only I can fix it" - The political manifestation of Titanic Culture
While my previous posts have explored this emerging cultural paradigm in business contexts (see first comment for the foundational analysis), its most visible and dangerous expression may be in politics (Trump, Milei, Bolsonaro). What is specifically interesting to me, is that with Musk we have the first business person to adapt (and shape) this style. So possibly, we could see more businesses adapting his leadership. Therefore I want to look at politics now to see what we might see in business soon.
The political Titanic pattern:
- Complex systemic problems → Reduced to simple heroic solutions
- Institutional expertise → Dismissed as "deep state" or "establishment"
- Collaborative governance → Replaced by charismatic authority
- Democratic processes → Reframed as obstacles to necessary change
Why it's appealing:
✨ Simple narratives in complex times ✨ Clear accountability (someone to blame or praise) ✨ Emotional satisfaction over policy details ✨ Mythic storytelling that transcends boring governance
The global pattern: We're seeing this simultaneously across democracies worldwide - suggesting it's not just about individual leaders but about a deeper cultural shift in how we understand leadership and governance.
The question: Are we witnessing the future of (business) leadership, or democracy's shipwreck?
